Community engagement for the Pyrmont-Ultimo Transport Plan
Client:
Transport for New South Wales in partnership with bd infrastructure
Project Overview:
We adopted an ‘out-of-cycle’ engagement approach aimed at reaching a broader range of stakeholders to inform transport planning in Pyrmont, Ultimo, and Glebe. The purpose was to gather feedback and insights about the local communities’ future vision, aspirations, and concerns. This engagement aimed to inform the Pyrmont-Ultimo Transport Plan and support the 20-year vision outlined in the Pyrmont Peninsula Place Strategy. Through diverse engagement methods, stakeholders shared their perspectives on living, working, and playing in the area.
Objective:
The project’s primary objective is to advocate continuing “out-of-cycle” engagement for future Transport for NSW planning projects. By reaching a wider audience and obtaining rich feedback, this approach ensures a deeper understanding of community sentiments and supports the planning of sustainable and inclusive future transport plans and activities.
Our Role:
Our role was to conduct stakeholder engagement activities, coding, analysing, and reporting thematic findings. They applied the GHD Loveable Cities Framework and facilitated discussions based on statements like “I Love,” “I Wish,” and “I Wonder.” The engagement team also attended project-specific meetings and briefings.
Challenges:
One of the challenges was to capture genuine, honest feedback during incidental engagements, where participants were not required to provide their names or contact details. This was balanced by providing opportunities for stakeholders to be contacted for further engagement.
Outcome:
The key recommendation is to continue “out-of-cycle” engagement for future Transport for NSW planning projects. Additional recommendations include conducting more engagement activities, designing surveys for social and affordable housing tenants, organising pop-up events, maintaining contact with stakeholders, providing cultural and heritage opportunities, and engaging a professional evaluator for Pyrmont-Ultimo Transport Program and project evaluations. These recommendations further strengthen community engagement, awareness, and collaboration, leading to evidence-informed decision-making for future transport projects in the area.
